Professor Mohamed A. Imam is a Consultant Upper Limb and Complex Trauma Surgeon and Clinical Lead for Trauma Surgery at the Rowley Bristow Orthopaedic Centre, Ashford and St Peter's NHS Foundation Trust, Chertsey, Surrey. He holds concurrent positions as Professor and Medical Director at the Smart Health Centre, University of East London, where he leads research into artificial and machine intelligence in clinical practice and surgery.
Internationally fellowship-trained across the world's foremost orthopaedic institutions β including John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford, University Hospital Balgrist in Zurich under Professor Christian Gerber (the world-leading pioneer of modern shoulder surgery), Stanford University, the Mayo Clinic, The Steadman Clinic (US Olympic team centre of excellence), Harvard, and the BGU Trauma Centre in Ludwigshafen, Germany β Professor Imam brings exceptional technical mastery and academic rigour to every aspect of his work.
He completed the Oxford Executive Leadership Programme (ELP) at SaΓ―d Business School, holds postgraduate qualifications including MD, MSc in Orthopaedics with Honours, D.SportMed, PhD in Musculoskeletal Sciences (rotator cuff tendon healing), and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics β FRCS (Tr & Orth).
As a consultant upper limb specialist, Professor Imam treats the full spectrum of shoulder, elbow, hand, wrist, and complex trauma conditions. He is recognised as a Specialist Consultant by all major UK insurance companies and holds a 5.0 star rating across Doctify, iWantGreatCare, and Top Doctors. He was awarded the Top Doctors Award 2024 and the Doctify Outstanding Patient Experience Badge 2025, placing him in the top 10% of healthcare professionals in the UK. He is also registered on the National Joint Registry (GMC: 7043919) and listed on the PHIN consultant database.
With over 175 peer-reviewed publications, 4,000+ academic citations, 75,500+ reads, and 12+ book chapters, Professor Imam is one of the most prolific upper limb and trauma researchers in the UK. He is one of four surgeons on the national shoulder and elbow research committee of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS), leading national multi-centre trials. He has filed patents, designed orthopaedic instruments, and developed novel surgical techniques. He serves on multiple international editorial boards, peer-review panels, and examiner committees.
Professor Imam founded OrthoGlobe β an international orthopaedic collaborative network β and co-founded the FRCS Mentor Initiative. He is the creator of ResBot.ai and CiteSort.ai, AI-powered research tools designed for the clinical research community. At the Smart Health Centre, UEL, he leads research applying artificial and machine intelligence to clinical diagnosis, surgical planning, and patient outcomes. He holds a Stanford Machine Learning Specialization (2024) and has been featured in OrthoSpaceX for his vision on AI's role in modern orthopaedics.
Professor Imam has authored four books: a textbook on the use of stem cells in orthopaedics, a text atlas on shoulder arthroscopy, and UNLOCK: The 17 Cs of Human Flourishing in the Digital Age β a landmark work drawing on thirty years of surgery, personal loss, and his own experience as a patient with kidney cancer. Multiple further books are in development. He is also host of the Deep Dive Ortho podcast, and writes for Top Doctors and other clinical media platforms.
