Professor Mohamed A. Imam is a Consultant Upper Limb and Complex Trauma Surgeon and Clinical Lead for Trauma Surgery at the Rowley Bristow Orthopaedic Centre, Ashford and St Peter's NHS Foundation Trust, Chertsey, Surrey. He holds concurrent positions as Professor and Medical Director at the Smart Health Centre, University of East London, where he leads research into artificial and machine intelligence in clinical practice and surgery.
Internationally fellowship-trained across the world's foremost orthopaedic institutions โ including John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford, University Hospital Balgrist in Zurich under Professor Christian Gerber (the world-leading pioneer of modern shoulder surgery), Stanford University, the Mayo Clinic, The Steadman Clinic (US Olympic team centre of excellence), Harvard, and the BGU Trauma Centre in Ludwigshafen, Germany โ Professor Imam brings exceptional technical mastery and academic rigour to every aspect of his work.
He completed the Oxford Executive Leadership Programme (ELP) at Saรฏd Business School, holds postgraduate qualifications including MD, MSc in Orthopaedics with Honours, D.SportMed, PhD in Musculoskeletal Sciences (rotator cuff tendon healing), and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics โ FRCS (Tr & Orth).

Professor Imam founded OrthoGlobe โ an international orthopaedic collaborative network โ and co-founded the FRCS Mentor Initiative. He is the creator of ResBot.ai and CiteSort.ai, AI-powered research tools designed for the clinical research community. At the Smart Health Centre, UEL, he leads research applying artificial and machine intelligence to clinical diagnosis, surgical planning, and patient outcomes. He holds a Stanford Machine Learning Specialization (2024) and has been featured in OrthoSpaceX for his vision on AI's role in modern orthopaedics.

Professor Imam has authored four books: a textbook on the use of stem cells in orthopaedics, a text atlas on shoulder arthroscopy, and UNLOCK: The 17 Cs of Human Flourishing in the Digital Age โ a landmark work drawing on thirty years of surgery, personal loss, and his own experience as a patient with kidney cancer. When I was nine, my mother put a book in my hands. How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. I read it like a boy who had found a secret door in his own house. The world outside was the same. The world inside was not. At twelve, I read it again, and I made a promise: one day I would write a book that did for others what that book had done for me.
Then I went on with life. I became a doctor, then a surgeon. I chased grades, then skills, then mastery. I worked through nights when the hospital felt like the only world that existed. From the outside, it looked like a straight line up. Inside, it felt like a man running on a treadmill that kept speeding up.
Then the losses came. In 2016, my mother died after more than a decade of breast cancer โ in the ICU, with a tube in her throat, she still wore a smile on her face and had just completed her master's degree. In 2023, my brother Ali died at forty from a rare post-COVID complication. Hours before he collapsed, he sent money to help someone in need. His last act on earth was kindness. In 2024, my father โ the man who had walked twenty kilometres to school as a boy โ simply did not wake up one morning.
Months later, I became a patient for the first time. Kidney cancer. A nephrectomy. Then lung metastases. Immunotherapy. Lying in a bed I had stood beside for twenty years, I saw something simple and sharp: Skill is not the same as legacy. Impact is not the same as presence.
I reached for my notebooks. I gathered thirty years of lessons from patients, teachers, failures, and grief. I rewrote them with the urgency of someone who knows time is not guaranteed. This is that book. It is not theory. It is a life โ mine โ laid open, in the hope that it helps you live yours more fully.
